Buying at Auction

Buying at Auction

How to buy in our auctions

Mallams want to make buying at auction, either in the saleroom or online, as easy and enjoyable as possible. Our specialists and client services teams are available across a wide range of locations including Oxford, Cheltenham and Abingdon so whatever your interest or query we can always help.

We are proud to offer regular auctions throughout the year. Be amongst the first to hear of forthcoming sales by registering with us or finding out more below.

Online catalogues for all of the sales are available to view approximately 10-15 days in advance

Register at the front desk in advance of the auction, where you will receive a paddle number with which to bid. Take your seat in the saleroom and when you wish to bid, raise your paddle and catch the auctioneer’s attention.

You may leave a commission bid via the website, by telephone, by email or in person at Mallams’ salerooms. Simply state the maximum price you would like to pay for a lot and we will purchase it for you at the lowest possible price, while taking the reserve price and other bids into account.

Book a telephone line before the sale, stating which lots you would like to bid for, and we will call you in time for you to bid through one of our staff in the saleroom. If you can’t get to the saleroom in person, a telephone bid still allows you live participation.

You can bid online via our own bidding platform on Mallams.co.uk at no additional charge.

Please be aware that online bidding via the-saleroom.com costs an extra 4.95% plus VAT of the final selling price.

Overseas clients will need to provide proof of identity (a scan of a passport or a national ID card) and payment card details prior to the auction.

Please be aware that there is a buyer’s premium of 30% inclusive of VAT on the hammer price. For example:

Hammer price – £100.00

Premium at 25% of £100 = £25

VAT at 20% of £25 = £5.00

Total price – £130.00

We have several ways to pay your invoice including:-

Secure online payment via our website

Bank Transfer

Debit card (plus 2.28% VAT inc on Non-EEA cards)

Credit card up to a maximum of £2000 (plus 2.28% VAT inc. on Business and Non-EEA cards)

Mallams provides a shipping service for selected items. To check if shipping is available for a particular lot, please refer to the lot listing on our website.

Shipping arrangements can be managed through your Mallams account. A preliminary shipping quote is accessible on the sale page, though this may vary depending on the hammer price. To ensure a smooth process, please add a delivery address to your account; otherwise, we will use your billing address by default.

We aim to dispatch items within 8 working days. If your invoice includes both eligible and ineligible items for shipping, you can still have the suitable items shipped.

Our shipping service is available only within the UK. Additional costs may apply for locations beyond the UK mainland, such as Northern Ireland, The Highlands and Islands, The Isle of Man, The Scilly Isles, or The Channel Islands, where shipping expenses are typically higher.

We use FedEx for larger items and Royal Mail tracked delivery for smaller items like jewellery. Please note that we do not provide insurance for shipping. For high-value, bulky, or fragile items, we recommend using a specialist courier service. A list of recommended couriers is available below.
