Mallams holds three specialist traditional picture sales annually, each of which include oils, watercolours and prints from the Renaissance onwards. These sales also regularly include single-owner collections.
The department’s extensive knowledge has been instrumental in the discovery of some major finds. These include: a collection of fragments from a sixteenth century Italian translation of Vitruvius which realised £165,000; an unknown Edwin Landseer oil sketch which made £75,000; and a lost Francois Boucher drawing.
In February 2018 the team had the privilege of handling the sale of a fine collection of 18th and 19th century drawings and watercolours until recently on loan to the Ashmolean Museum Oxford. These works aroused great interest from far and wide and achieved some astonishing prices.
