The tiny 12.5cm high bronze figure attracted worldwide interest both before and at the auction, eventually selling for £22,000 to an overseas telephone bidder (hammer price).
Robin Fisher, Mallams’ specialist said after the sale ‘these small, revered Buddhist bronzes do come in for sale occasionally, but the figure's impeccable provenance made all the difference. It had come from the estate of the late Oliver Watson (1949 - 2023) who was the Emeritus Professor if Islamic Art and Architecture and curator of Islamic Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London’.
