Gothic coffer illustrates the enduring appeal of style & quality over fashion at Mallams

16/08/2024

Coffers date back to the Medieval period and were originally used to store valuables and precious items, hence the much used phrase today of “swelling the coffers”.

Aside from their aesthetic appeal they remain very versatile pieces of furniture for modern homes.  Whilst they may not be brimming over with gold and jewels, they certainly provide much needed storage as well as a sound investment for the future.

Lot 228 at Mallams Country Living sale in Cheltenham demonstrated the lasting appeal of the coffer.  From a local Cheltenham property and handed down through various generations who have worked within the church, the coffer was reputedly from Manchester Cathedral, and possibly dated as early as 1543.

With interest from international bidders, the coffer exceeded its £1000 to £2000 estimate with the hammer finally going down at £7,200.

Chloe Wood from Mallams, who co-ordinated the sale said:

“We are delighted with this result and it demonstrates the timeless appeal of good craftmanship.  This coffer was particularly attractive with impressive carving and good provenance;  the quality was truly exceptional.  All of this combined with its versatility and sound investment proved very attractive to our buyers”
